1958年春，果树生产队和邻近的村屯发生了严重的麻疹传染病，病情在不断地扩散。作为医生的王明义心里非常着急。他征得领导同意后，每天背着药箱走家串户，查病情，早治疗，常早出晚归，有时往诊到深夜才能休息。及时控制了病情，第二次麻疹流行期，孙克诚的孩子也染上了麻疹并发了肺炎和气管炎，呼吸困难，神志不清，当时孩子的父母认为孩子没救了，绝望地放弃了治疗。王明义同志边安慰家长，边采取各种措施给孩子治疗，经过几昼夜的努力，终于挽救回了这个不满周岁的生命。王明义的责任心和医术感动得孙克诚夫妇不知怎样感谢王明义才好。
