用一个汉字，高度概括民众对本年度重要事件及社会态势的看法，已成为不少国家和地区的惯例。作为住在国最主要的汉字使用者，华侨华人对评选结果历来保持关注。

在马来西亚的评选中，“路”字拿下了28887张投票中的8795票，问鼎“年度汉字”。

当地华人社会普遍认为，“路”字既代表了“一带一路”建设在马来西亚引发的广泛关注，也体现了全国大选前，公众对于国家未来发展的期待。

“大选在即，政府与人民都将作出抉择：建国60年了，这个国家的未来路在何方？”马来西亚华星艺术团团长叶啸说，马来西亚发展受益于“一带一路”建设，民众希望将来可从中获得更多机遇、找到更好的出路，因此“路”字当选可谓实至名归。

2017年，马来西亚东海岸铁路、马新高铁及轻快铁等项目或启动、或招标，其中不少得益于“一带一路”的推动。马来西亚国际商务促进协会总会长张创迪说，“我们希望这条‘路’能越来越宽，越来越通畅。”

日本年度汉字评选始于1995年，今年已是第23届。日媒普遍认为，今年“北”字当选，主要凸显了民众对朝鲜半岛局势的担忧。
