英国一战华工纪念碑计划明年9月落成

人民网伦敦12月12日电 （白天行）由华人社区筹建的一战华工纪念碑计划将于明年9月6日在伦敦东部的皇家阿尔伯特码头落成。这里曾是华人在伦敦的首个聚集地。

日前，由英国华侨发起的“确保我们铭记”立碑计划举行发布会，公布了建碑进展。该纪念碑高9.6米、重29吨，将位于伦敦总部基地集团在皇家阿尔伯特码头的新商业区的核心。

纪念筹款工作正在顺利进行。现已通过个人、团体及慈善活动等捐赠获得23万英镑。总部基地承诺拨付10万英镑，用于支持规划、照明等工程。

英国社区与地方政府事务部次官伯恩勋爵表示，一战华工组成了为战争招募的最大工人队伍，但很少人了解他们所做的危险而重要的工作。我们需要记得并且尊重他们的贡献。

一战华工共约14万人，他们在欧洲大多从事挖掘战壕、筑路、救护伤员等工作，约两万人付出了生命。

There were about 140 thousand people in the first World War I, most of whom were engaged in digging trenches, road building, rescue and wounded in Europe, and about twenty thousand people had paid their lives.
