Yesterday, I received the manuscript of Hua Ding's book "The World is Colorful (Huading Miscellany)" from Professor Hua Ding of Zhejiang University. In his letter, he asked me to write the "Preface" for the book. I am a lifelong friend of Mr. Hua Ding, and we have known each other for more than ten years. I have read and reviewed many of his personal monographs, and I have also written many book reviews for his books such as "Huading Collection (Three Volumes)" published by Zhejiang University Press in 2017. When I received the "Huading Miscellany", I was delighted to read it and would like to share my thoughts after reading it.

The "Huading Miscellany" (Volume 1 and 2) contains about 390,000 characters and includes more than 260 of the author's selected essays. The entire book is divided into nine sections: politics, party building, economy, self-cultivation, figures, knowledge seeking, art, life, and the twelve zodiac signs. Most of the articles have been published in newspapers and magazines.

In his "Postscript," Mr. Hua Ding writes that the world is colorful, and essays reflect this colorful world. Looking through Mr. Hua's essays, they cover four aspects: current affairs and politics, social life, positive energy, and cultural arts. Some of the topics include "It Takes a Liable Person to Solve a Broken Bell" and "Tolerance Is the Key to a Wide Ocean"; "The Test of Money-mindedness"; "The Importance of Talent Recommendation"; "Lessons Learned from a County Vice-Mayor Falling"; "Party Classes in Longyou"; "The Revelation of One Movie Ticket"; "Self-protection Skills for Society"; "Rational Thinking about Traffic Accidents"; "Starting from the Qiantang River Bridge"; "Doing Business Is Doing People"; "Taking Action Against Fake Goods"; "Pitfalls of Prison Cells"; and "More Valuable Than Gold Medals." Additionally, he advocates positive energy such as "Differentiating Beauty from Ugliness"; "Overcoming Obstacles on the Road to Mogan Mountain"; "Looking Far into the Future"; "Recollections at the Memorial Hall of Zhengzhang"; "Chatting About Agriculture and Rural Life"; "Starting with the Story of Jianzhen Crossing the Sea"; and "Being Kind to Setbacks." Mr. Hua Ding also wrote essays on cultural arts such as "I am Satisfied with Wang Bomin"; "Song Baoluo and His Famous Actress"; "A Painting Gifted by Huang Yibin to Huading's Couple"; "Resume of a Writer Chen Xuezhao"; "Impressions of Poet-Scholar Huang Xuejie"; "Leading Figures from South China Who Overcame Adversity - Dai Guang, Secretary of the Party"; "Reflections on the Establishment of Public Welfare Funds by He Zhijun and Xue Yanzhuang"; and "Tribute to a Good Friend, Fang Jilixu." Furthermore, there are essay collections for each zodiac sign during the Spring Festival, including "Monkey Year, Monkeys Discussing Monkeys"; "Rat Year, Rats Chatting About Rats"; "Tiger Year, Should Have More Tiger Spirit"; "Rabbit Year, A Few Words on Rabbits"; "Brief Talk about Dragon Culture"; "Talking about Love and Horse Painting During Horse Year"; and "Liu Xiong's Drawing of Chickens." In conclusion, Mr. Hua Ding summarized his writing style as being realistic yet abstract, incorporating both narrative and commentary with deep philosophical insights; brief yet vivid, with good readability; relevant to current events and social issues; deeply rooted in daily life, capturing what people have but cannot express in words.

In my opinion, Mr. Hua Ding is a professor who is simple and profound, with distinct personality traits. He experienced setbacks when he was promoted to a higher rank nearing retirement, and wrote "Thoughts on the Appraisal of Titles" as a result. This piece has been published publicly in various books such as "My Years" and "My Writing Career (Volume 1 and 2)." He believes that people have both strengths and weaknesses, and that life inevitably brings setbacks. The best way to deal with setbacks is to stand up from the career and prove oneself through achievements. From his numerous articles that call for striving towards success while fighting against adversity, it is clear that he is unwilling to accept defeat and deeply frustrated. This is also one of the driving forces behind him continuing to write essays, even to this day.

However, how can one avoid regrets in life? Who would dare to say that they have no weaknesses? For scholars, what could be more valuable than facing life, reflecting on current events, commenting on the literary world, and striving forward? Thus, Mr. Hua Ding's retirement years were filled with abundant creations. As people move, so do books - updating content, reappearing, connecting them together to form a life. After retiring for 30 years, he has published 30 monographs, with an average of one book per year and over 600 essays in more than 140 academic journals and newspapers. In his retirement, his main focus was writing and painting, which he deservedly called "author" and "painter." The transition from teacher to writer at his advanced age allowed his scholarly nature to return. As a scholar, he maintained honesty and independence in his academic thoughts and never succumbed to pressure. Most of the articles in "Hua Ding's Miscellany Collection" were written during his sunset years after retirement. He persisted in maintaining spiritual independence and freedom of thought while maintaining an innovative thinking concept throughout his writing. This theme runs through his writing and is the highlight of this collection of essays.

Time flies by like water, and the hair turns frosty while the jowls turn wrinkled. Looking back on the past, one can roam around with wide-open eyes and an open mind. Although the paper is short, the feelings are long, and the collected essays are heavy. Each piece of paper and each word carries its own deep meaning. Mr. Hua Ding has been writing tirelessly for decades, publishing monographs at his own expense and giving them away to school teaching and research departments, libraries, museums, communities, colleagues, classmates, students, and relatives and friends all over the country. These monographs gather his lifelong efforts and wisdom. Mr. Hua Ding is pure, diligent, and conscientious in both his words and deeds, which is not easy in today's environment filled with utilitarianism. Especially when it comes to his academic pursuits, he always maintains a healthy and independent thinking style, which is truly admirable. In the Year of the Ox, I gathered some of my award-winning news reports and photography works that I had published as a journalist. With the book title "A Career as a Journalist" written by Shao Huazhan, General Editor and President of People's Daily. After sending it to Professor Hua Ding, he wrote tens of thousands of words of commentary and published a monograph titled "Interpreting Shen Wenhua," which fully displays Professor Hua Ding's wisdom and warmth from his predecessors. Mr. Hua Ding has also published several monographs entitled "Interpretation" for four famous professors, Huang Yibin, Wang Bomin, Huang Xuejie, and Fang Jilixu, which have received high praise.

"Looking up at the vastness of the universe and down at the abundance of creations, one can fully enjoy the pleasure of sight and hearing. It is truly joyful." (Wang Xizhi) Reading a miscellany collection of essays while gazing out the window, one can see how Hua Ding's pen has painted vivid pictures of current events, politics, social phenomena, art, and other topics with sharp perspectives and insightful commentary. As I flip through the hundreds of thousands of words in this collection, I am also able to broaden my horizons and indulge in thought. The book contains many quotes from Mr. Hua Ding's teachers and friends, calligraphy and painting works given by renowned artists, Xu Wenying's beautiful paintings, letters from classmates, colleagues, and friends, a detailed catalog of his own publications, awards won in literary criticism, as well as his own traditional Chinese paintings. All these elements reveal the colorful world of Mr. Hua Ding's thoughts and the humanistic spirit nurtured by them.

People often say that reading is like living. In fact, books are like people. The process of publishing one book after another is the same as Mr. Hua Ding's life journey. In his essay "Reflections at 92" published in July this year, he summarized his life as follows: "A once-withered tree blooms again, and the future is promising; after ten years of trials and tribulations in three different places, I have been tempered; spring brings forth fruit, autumn reaps the harvest, and I continue to work for my country with my pen." For decades, Mr. Hua Ding was known for his strong writing skills in current affairs essays, but he also wrote extensively on literature, calligraphy, painting, and art criticism. He created thousands of traditional Chinese paintings and roamed freely in the artistic world of abstract and visual thinking. With both literary and artistic talents, he learned from Huang Binhong and Wang Bomin, becoming a master of their respective styles. Professor Huang Xuejie from Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics called him "a man who paints the world with two brushes."

"Hua Ding Miscellany Collection" only collects some of the author's manuscripts, but it offers a glimpse into the real world, people, and stories of the past. Read what you feel like reading, as each essay takes you on a journey of emotions and thoughts. The ups and downs of your feelings will accompany you through this collection, bringing you closer to history and reality.

"I miss Jiangnan the most, especially Hangzhou." (Bai Juyi) What is admirable and praiseworthy is that Mr. Hua Ding recently wrote a special book titled "Hangzhou, Keep Your Loved Memories" for the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou on September 23rd. The book was self-financed and given away free of charge to various sports teams, the protagonists of the stories in the book, and media outlets during the Asian Games. The entire book is based on various Hangzhou newspapers such as "Hangzhou Daily," "Metro Express," and "Qianjiang Evening News," compiling 263 stories of citizens' love for Hangzhou (about 190,000 words). In order to welcome the Asian Games, promote Hangzhou, spread kindness and love, and demonstrate Professor Hua Ding's selfless dedication to others, this book was written.

I wish Professor Hua Ding a evergreen art tree and good health and happiness.
