1982年，在中国香港演出《女驸马》而一炮走红。后多次在中央电视台春节联欢晚会参与演出。1985年获得全国黄梅戏中青年演员广播大奖赛第一名。1987年凭借《无事生非》获得第四届中国戏剧奖梅花表演奖。次年，凭借电视剧《严凤英》获得第8届中国电视剧飞天奖最佳女主角奖。1989年获得全国先进工作者称号。

1986年10月13日晚9点30分，马兰主演的黄梅戏剧目《无事生非》在人民大会堂演出，演出前马兰作为演员代表参加了李先念主席为欢迎女王伊丽莎白举行的国宴。

1987年，马兰凭借主演的莎士比亚戏《无事生非》获得第四届中国戏剧奖·梅花表演奖。同年，被评为国家一级演员。

1988年3月11日，马兰主演的人物传记电视剧《严凤英》在中央电视台播出，凭借该剧获得第6届中国电视金鹰奖最佳女演员、第8届中国电视剧飞天奖最佳女主角。春节期间主演的黄梅戏音乐电视剧《西厢记》在中央电视台播出。同年拍摄黄梅戏《劈棺惊梦》。

1991年4月，黄梅戏《红楼梦》整体构思，6月6日《红楼梦》初稿写成，后经修改，7月23日起进入120余天的创作主攻阶段（演员边到街头赈灾边排戏），11月24日晚，《红楼梦》在合肥长江剧院演出，后赴南京、北京、上海、武汉、长沙、广州、深圳等市区演出八十余场（统计截止到1992年）。

1992年3月，《红楼梦》进中南海怀仁堂演出两场（当时还不曾有戏被邀连演两场），马兰也凭借该剧获得第二届文华奖（戏曲表演奖）。4月《红楼梦》因故停演10个月。

1993年10月，《红楼梦》剧组赴香港演出。同年《梁祝》第四、六两场在香港、澳门、深圳演出，第三场在中央电视台1994年戏曲春节晚会中播出，《梁祝》全剧在合肥、新加坡、台湾演出。

1997年2月，马兰参加1997年中央电视台春节联欢晚会，在地方戏曲《戏苑飘香》中表演《女驸马》选段《状元府》。并与白燕升共同主持中央电视台春节戏曲晚会。

2010年1月29日，马兰赴北京参加2010“寻找邓丽君传人”暨“纪念邓丽君大型音乐会”。4月7日参加第20届上海白玉兰戏剧表演艺术奖颁奖晚会，和尚长荣宣读“最佳主角奖”，并与白燕升共同演唱黄梅戏《风尘女画家》选段《海滩别》。8月14日赴上海参加越剧名家何赛飞新专辑签售仪式。8月16日，赴河南参加《梨园春》第600期特别节目，与白燕升对唱黄梅戏经典唱段《海滩别》。11月21日，参加梨园春612期-第7届兰花奖颁奖晚会-兰花赋，和阎肃共同颁奖。

2011年2月13日，马兰参加北京电视台《八大剧种名家名段演唱会》，演唱《女驸马》，并与白燕升对唱黄梅戏经典唱段《海滩别》。8月23日参加在北京举行由“刘诗昆孙颖缔造非凡会所”主办的“幽默的高品质生活”征文启动仪式。

2012年1月19日，马兰参加贵州电视台春节联欢晚会“根深叶茂贵州情”，演唱《女驸马》和黄梅调《远山含笑》。2月21日，以马兰名字命名的“马兰戏剧工作室”，在上海市闵行区古美路街道成立。

On February 13, 2011, Ma Lan participated in the concert of eight famous dramas and famous passages on Beijing Television, sang "daughter-in-law", and sang the classic aria of Huangmei Opera "farewell to the beach" with Bai Yansheng. On February 21, "Malan drama studio", named after Malan, was established in Gumei road street, Minhang District, Shanghai.
