　　在陈凯歌看来，李白和杨玉环是最能代表唐代的人物：前者展现了唐代的高度开明自由，后者传递出了唐代的美。在距离新片《妖猫传》上映还有两天时，陈凯歌在新浪举行的新浪潮论坛上感慨：“我做完了我的大唐梦。”片中，黄轩饰演的诗人白乐天(即历史上的白居易)和染谷将太饰演的僧人空海跟随一只神秘的妖猫，重新回到那个让人魂牵梦萦的盛唐，领略李白和杨玉环的魅力。

　　“天子呼来不上船，自称臣是酒中仙。”“江畔何人初见月，江月何年初照人。”“又送王孙去，萋萋满别情。”论坛现场，陈凯歌各种唐诗佳句信手拈来，附带讲解和赏析，不知道的人还以为这是《中国诗词大会》的现场呢。作为最富文人气质的中国大导，陈凯歌一直有“唐朝情结”。他开玩笑地说，自己现在开口闭口都是“大唐大唐”，“好像这大唐是我们家的”。《妖猫传》改编自日本魔幻小说《沙门空海》，原著是以日本人的视角看大唐。陈凯歌觉得，既然是中文电影，就必须从中国人的角度出发，因此他把小说中非常次要的角色白居易提升为第一主角。

　　白居易这一人物，以往影视作品中极少涉及。在饰演白居易之前，黄轩对其印象就是一个模糊的历史人物，“一个留着胡子的老头儿”。为走进角色，他采用的方法是寻找自己和白居易的共性。“我读他的诗，发现在他一生写的2000多首诗里，有800多首都跟喝酒有关，正好我也爱喝酒。第二，他是一个很热爱生活的性情中人，比如冬天晒太阳，就写《赋冬日》，看了莲花就为花写首诗，这种热爱生活和自然的感觉我也有。”他把自己和白居易相似之处列出来，不足的东西再靠想象和陈凯歌启发，添添抹抹，“一点点逼出来”这个人物。

　　陈凯歌回忆，在襄阳拍摄时有一天突然天降大雪，他便临时加了一场雪中伫立戏，让剧组现弄了一件绢做的衣服，黄轩只披着这件薄薄的衣服，站在大雪中。监视器后的陈凯歌发现，雪渐渐落满黄轩的头发，他的眉目眼神慢慢发生微妙的变化。“这让我想起‘天人合一’这个词。我赶紧说，别停！让他再冻会儿。”片中，这个镜头只有五六秒，但黄轩在雪中站了30多分钟。

　　影片刚开始，白居易和空海还是两个不太得志的年轻人：前者写《长恨歌》三年没写出来，被人批评“诗是假的”，“一文不值”；后者漂洋过海来到中国求秘法，被拒于青龙寺门外。直到经过了妖猫这段奇幻之旅，两个人才得到事业上的升华。某种程度上说，《妖猫传》也是一部励志电影，两个年轻人在寻求历史真相的同时也实现了自我价值。

　　耗费六年时间建唐城，是陈凯歌拍摄该片时最为人称道的新闻。对此，他坦言，作为一个电影人，他常常思考：“在中国电影发展过程中，什么不应该被遗忘？用什么东西去替代爆米花大片？用什么证明中国电影在进步？”在他看来，与绚烂多姿的唐文化相连接，可能有新的途径可以开辟出来。“花六年时间建一座城不是一个轻易的决定，还得绿树成荫，不能是干瘪的。但不去建这么一座唐城，怎么让黄轩演？全是绿幕？！”他说，演员作为电影的表达者，如果有一座实景城，有巍峨的城楼、绚烂的色彩，演员得有多高兴。电影拍摄完成，他也完成了一趟奇幻之旅，“做完了我的大唐梦”。他透露，片中绿幕戏份只占3%，其他全部都是实景。

　　为此，该片还放弃了拍摄3D版。“制片方一开始非常希望做成3D的，因为票价高。但我和摄影师曹郁坚决认为，如果做成3D，那就对不起我们建了六年的唐城，对不起特效和演员表演。我希望《妖猫传》是一幅具有中国文人画风的长卷，或疾或徐地展开，让大家感受到什么是中国的梦。这个看法最后得到了制片方的支持，所以我们一咬牙一瞪眼，不做3D了。希望大唐的风姿能够让大家完全感受到，而不是戴着眼镜坐着看。”陈凯歌说。
