博物馆的英文是“Museum”这个词来源于希腊语，原本是用来称呼崇拜文艺女神（Muse)的宗教团体。公元前300年，托勒密一世在埃及亚历山大修建了“Museum”，将其多年的收藏放置于此，还招揽了阿基米德(Archimedes)、欧几里得(Euclid)等诸多大名鼎鼎的学者。虽然这个学术中心日后在战火中付之一炬，但“Museum”从此具有了“博物馆”的含义。
